What To Do If Your Boiler Stops Working

When your boiler stops working, here are the key checks to make in order of priority:

Safety first:

  • Check for any gas smells - if you smell gas, don't use electrical switches, open windows, and call the gas emergency line immediately on 0800 111 999

  • Ensure the boiler area is well-ventilated

Basic checks you can do:

  • Power supply - Check if the boiler is getting electricity (look for display lights or error codes)

  • Gas supply - Try other gas appliances like your hob to see if gas is reaching your home

  • Water pressure - Look at the pressure gauge on your boiler (should typically be between 1-2 bar when cold)

  • Thermostat settings - Ensure your thermostat is set above current room temperature and is calling for heat

  • Timer/programmer - Check if heating is scheduled to be on

  • Pilot light - On older boilers, check if the pilot light is lit (blue flame)

Simple fixes to try:

  • Reset the boiler using the reset button (usually red, hold for 10 seconds)

  • Check your fuse box for any tripped switches

  • Bleed radiators if they're cold at the top but warm at the bottom

  • Top up water pressure if the gauge shows low pressure (consult your manual for the filling loop)

When to call a professional:

  • If you smell gas

  • If there are error codes you can't resolve

  • If the boiler is making unusual noises

  • If you're uncomfortable doing any checks

  • If basic checks don't resolve the issue

Most boiler problems require a Gas Safe registered engineer, so please call Milards if you're unsure about anything.
